for a LONG time. Very nice of you to stop and try to help him out. I haven't been in a situation like that before to know how you feel. At one point I saw something that really scared me for couple of days to a point that I didn't want to drive, and it even wasn't as terrible as what you saw. I was driving in the freeway next to a 18 wheeler with 1 lane distance between me and the 18 wheeler...all of the sudden I see this huge SUV start flipping over infront of the 18 wheeler and the 18 wheeler slamming on his brakes. The screeching from his tires were so loud and me being scared that he might jacknife and hit me I gained speed and got my butt out of there. For couple of days I was just thinking and thinking if the people in the SUV survived :( Anyways hope you get better man. Try not thinking about it.
 I have nightmares about that happening...I'd be the poor bastard you'd hear about on the news that gets killed by a softball-size chunk while spreading out my body over the hood and screaming "Nooo!"
